Dean was an active member in the Valley Ford Church near Spokane. His faith gave him strength to overcome adversity, first when his lost a leg in 1990 due to a drunk driver and again in 2006 when he suffered a major stroke. His deep and abiding faith would not let him give up and continually strove to keep moving forward. In 2010, Dean and his sister, Candy moved to the Vancouver area to be closer to family.
